Helena Bioinformatics Announces Three New Strategic Research Partnerships in Bulgaria
Helena Bioinformatics has entered into research cooperation agreements with the Department of Intelligent Systems at IICT-BAS, the Bulgarian Association for Intelligent Systems, and the Bulgarian Society of Robotics.
Genomics depends on more than sequencing. Turning genetic data into useful knowledge also requires reliable computational methods, shared technical standards, secure research infrastructure and cooperation between people working across medicine, biology, computer science and engineering.
Helena Bioinformatics is therefore announcing three new strategic partnerships with Bulgarian scientific and professional organisations:
- Intelligent Systems Department at the Institute of Information and Communication Technologies, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (IICT-BAS);
- Bulgarian Association for Intelligent Systems (BAIS);
- Bulgarian Society of Robotics (BSR).
The agreements establish separate frameworks for scientific cooperation. Each partnership has its own focus, but they share one practical objective: to connect Helena’s work in bioinformatics and clinical genomics with Bulgarian expertise in intelligent systems, artificial intelligence, research infrastructure, automation and robotics.
Working with IICT-BAS on intelligent biomedical systems
Helena’s cooperation with the department of Intelligent Systems at IICT-BAS brings together two closely related fields.
Helena contributes its experience in bioinformatics, genomic interpretation and biomedical data analysis and the department would bring their research expertise in intelligent systems, dynamic ontologies, multi-agent architectures, hybrid models and decision-making under uncertainty.
Together we are planning to work on the development of semantic models for integrating genomic, clinical and laboratory information. These models can help different types of biomedical data retain their meaning when they are combined, analysed or exchanged between systems.
The partnership also covers methods for working with incomplete or indirect information, intelligent diagnostic and monitoring systems, and mechanisms for explaining and tracing analytical decisions. These questions are particularly relevant in biomedical research, where a result must remain connected to its source data, assumptions and method of calculation.
Building research capacity with BAIS
Our partnership with the Bulgarian Association for Intelligent Systems has a broader scientific and organisational scope.
BAIS brings together specialists working on intelligent systems and artificial intelligence in healthcare, industry, education and public administration. It also supports research programmes, professional training, conferences and cooperation with Bulgarian and international organisations.
The agreement covers joint work in personalised biomedical applications, genomic research, deterministic variant classification and the use of artificial intelligence in life sciences.
Our work would focus on building the infrastructure around research software and biomedical data. Helena and BAIS will work on standards-based APIs, metadata services, quality labelling and secure software deployment. Both organisations will also share research and computing infrastructure to expedite our projects.
Connecting genomic data with robotics and automation
The agreement with the Bulgarian Society of Robotics opens a different line of research.
Helena and BSR will examine how genomic, molecular and clinical information can be connected with robotic and automated systems used in medical research, laboratory processes and, where appropriate, future healthcare applications.
The possible areas of cooperation include laboratory automation, diagnostic and monitoring systems, simulations, digital twins and models that connect patient-specific molecular information with the control of medical robots or nanorobotic systems.
Another area of work between Helena and BSR would be to integrate standardised interfaces between Folklore, laboratory information systems, research databases and automated devices.
Strengthening the connections around Bulgarian genomics
At Helena Bioinformatics, we see these partnerships as part of our vision to create a stronger link between genomics, artificial intelligence, research infrastructure and engineering in Bulgaria.
For us, this means working in an environment where ideas can be developed with input from different scientific and technical disciplines, then turned into concrete research questions, prototypes and joint projects. It gives our work around Folklore a broader base and creates more opportunities for collaboration, funding applications, publications and training.
The importance goes beyond Helena Bioinformatics. Genomics develops faster when expertise is not kept inside separate institutions or fields. Clinical knowledge, computational methods, data infrastructure and automation need to meet around the same problems.
Bulgaria already has capable researchers, engineers and scientific organisations. These agreements create a practical framework for bringing more of that knowledge together and applying it to genomic research.
Our next step is to turn these agreements into focused work with clear solutions, shared responsibilities and real measurable results. By doing that consistently, we hope to contribute not only to Helena Bioinformatics' development, but to a more connected and capable genomics community in Bulgaria.
